I remember it like it was yesterday, the year that pop culture changed into the bellowing beast it is today: 2007. Britney spears went crazy from fame, celebrities taking out their trash made headlines, and the now prehistoric first iPhone was released.
It truly was a spectacular year for music! When I say music, I mean what you now refer to as your go-to karaoke numbers, starting with Fergie’s iconic “London Bridge” (oh shit!).
The music scene was also full of one hit wonders, like Kat DeLuna’s “Whine Up”.
2007 saw the rise of cult classic “Crank That” by Soilaj boy, which dominated the charts, internet scene, and your local high school.
We can’t talk about music without discussing Akon. Mr.Lonely himself, ran the charts jumping on all kinds of hist during this time including Gwen Stefani’s “Sweet Escape”. As for what happened to him after that, no one actually knows.
2007 saw Naomi Campbell strutting her way to the NYC sanitation garage to complete her community service wearing Dolce & Gabbana – of course. Trash never looked so glamorous!
It was the first year homegirl Miranda Kerr took to the Victoria Secret stage, solidifying Australia’s existence in the fashion scene.
Movies and TV Shows
Before we all became obsessed with Netflix, Pirate bay (R.I.P) was the go to place for the latest movies and TV shows.
Pirates of The Caribbean, Spider-Man, Transformers, and Harry Potter were all box office hits that year.
THIS IS SPARTA! 300 surprised everyone grossing $70.9 million. Did I mention Gerard Butler’s abs? Probably not so surprising that it did so well!
Household favourite TV shows included the never ending Grey’s Anatomy (yep, it’s still running) and Desperate Housewives.
This year was far worse for some, like the American dream star Britney Spears. After a messy legal custody battle with then beau Kevin Federline and a controlling manager and family, Britney Spears was pushed to the edge causing her to shave all her hair off and have a very public mental breakdown. The destructive power of fame, paparazzi, and living in the public eye, that many forgot after Princess Diana died, was once again brought to light.
2007 wasn’t all fun and games for everyone, it marked the year early 00’s superstar Paris Hilton was sentenced to jail, Anna Nicole Smith died, the final Harry Potter book was released, and Vladimir Putin was placed on the cover of TIME magazine.
What was your favourite pop culture moment from 2007?
