Play this as you read on.
Picture yourself between 2010 and 2013. You paired character logo tees with coloured denim, took selfies on your Nokia brick phone and bolted home in time for Dance Academy on ABC3. RIP Rollercoaster. Now the show is back again, this time on the big screen, and to celebrate, Blitz chatted with Jordan Rodrigues, who plays Christian Reed, to discuss what it was like to be on the Dance Academy set once again.
The movie is set 18 months after the fam studied at the National Academy of Dance. Yet it’s been a while since the show aired. How did it feel to be back on the Dance Academy set?
It felt like I was home again. Dance Academy holds a special place in my heart, and so do the cast and crew. When I heard we were gonna make a movie I couldn’t think of anything else I would want to do.
What has Christian been up to since his days at the Academy, and what’s changed?
When we last saw Christian he was offered a contract into a dance company. He realised that that wasn’t what we really wanted and chose to stay and teach underprivileged kids locally in a drop-in centre. Christian has been there ever since the Academy and couldn’t be happier.
Since the show ended, it became increasingly popular worldwide. Why do you think that is?
The show became so popular because of the content. You will so laugh out loud and also cry, but the story lines are so important to show on television. I know if I had a show like this to watch when I was growing up, I wouldn’t have felt like such an outcast, so I’m glad this show can be entertaining and educational at the same time for our viewers.
What can old and new fans expect to see in Dance Academy: The Movie?
They can expect to see all of their favourite characters go through new trials and tribulations in their adult careers and, of course, the amazing dances.
More importantly, will we see Christian’s signature “staring into the distance” face in the film?
Maybe, maybe not. I haven’t seen the movie but you’re going to have to wait and see!
Favourite Dance Academy moment?
Sydney, Los Angeles or New York?
Christian’s got it all in his post-Academy life. Can you share a hot tip on how twenty-somethings can afford a house in the CBD right after studying our tush off?
Christian is in a unique situation. Because of the work he does at the drop-in centre, he reaps the benefit of staying in a nice apartment with a killer view for free! Trust me, I’m jealous too.
