Artsweek 2017 Murals: Austin Bates

Mural Motivation

I have recently decided to try to paint like I draw. This typically involves a stream of consciousness, with interlocking and interconnected figures, faces and shapes. I have also concurrently been considering the conceptual significance of the drip, and its existence as both incidental/accidental and deliberate mark. For this piece I sought to make the drip a central and definitive component, not just of the piece as a whole, but of the individual faces themselves.
The combination of these two elements, unconscious and conscious, has, I feel, produced a comprehensive and thought provoking piece.
