To celebrate #girlpower, we’ve compiled a list of our fave female musicians.
Leadlight – Julia Jacklin
Originally from NSW’s Blue Mountains, Julia Jacklin fell in love with music at the age of 10, upon discovering Britney Spears. Since then, Julia has captured the hearts of many, with her honest, raw vocals, and dreamy alt-pop sound. Embarking on a national tour in May in promotion of her debut album, Don’t Let the Kids Win, you can catch Julia live in Sydney on 25th at the Metro Theatre.
Uninvited – Mallrat
Hailing from Brisbane, Queensland, 18-year old Mallrat appeared on the music scene almost overnight. Describing herself as “the Hannah Montana of the rap game,” Mallrat’s style is unique; she raps, sings, and makes her own music videos. Catch her live next month, playing Sydney’s Hudson Ballroom on the 7th April.
Can You Deal? – Bleached
Formed in 2011 by sisters Jennifer and Jessica Calvin, Bleached are an alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California. Just this week, they released an EP titled Can You Deal?, inspired by the sexist questions and comments they received whilst promoting their 2016 album, Welcome the Worms. Front woman Jennifer also released a zine under the same title, a commentary on what it is like to be a woman in the music industry, featuring content written by female artists.
Green Light – Lorde
Who would I be if I didn’t include this song in this playlist? Green Light is Lorde’s first solo release since her 2013 debut, Pure Heroine. Highly anticipated and worth the wait, this track is fun, catchy and upbeat. It is the first single from her sophomore album, Melodrama, expected later this year.
Shine – Asta
Since winning of Triple J’s Unearthed High in 2012, Asta has ranked in Triple J’s Hottest 100 twice, and even toured with Ellie Goulding. In February of this year, released her EP, Shine, which is fun, upbeat and dance-worthy. Keep an eye out for this Tasmanian singer/song writer – things can only get better from here.
