SAMPLE SALES: A GUIDE TO SURVIVING THEM

Everyone loves a good sale! But what you didn’t know is that the best ones happen outside of ASOS. Forget your 10% student discount, its all about the sample sale!

These sales have been a long standing tradition in the fashion industry for fashionsta to score a bargain. For those who haven’t gone to one of these before it can be quite daunting. So here are 5 tips to help you through it and some upcoming sample sales for you to check out.

1. KNOW WHERE TO LOOK & GET IN EARLY

Sample sales are usually held in random buildings, in hard to find streets around Sydney. Make sure you know where it exactly is and get there early! Once the good stuff is gone, they usually won’t replenish it and suddenly your stuck with the scrapes of fabrics on the floor.

2. KNOW WHAT YOU WANT

Okay, sample sales are a lot to take in sometimes and hard to know where to start. Its always good to have an idea of what you want before stepping in. By the time you decide blue or green they will probably both be gone and your stuck with none and you don’t want that.

3. HAVE A BUDGET!

With so many beautiful things reduced down to $20, its hard to see why getting the same shirt in different colours is a bad idea. However, after the adrenaline rush has worn off and your bank statement comes through – it all becomes clear. Use cash! Don’t let that sweater-you-already-have-at-home-but-in-green seduce you. Besides, a lot of the time they don’t accept cards and if they do, the cash line is always quicker!

4. DRESS SIMPLE

One of the more awkward parts of a sample sale is the shared changing room. A big open space, veiled by a thin cloth, filled with left behind samples and people frantically take their clothes on and off in front of you. To avoid being there long, dress simple. Girls, lightweight dresses that you can slip on and off. Guys, shorts and a tee is the way to go.

5. LETS NOT FORGET OUR DIGNITY

Sometimes these sales can turn into a scene out of Mean girls (like what happened at this Alexander Wang sale). Remember to be respectful, don’t push and shove and if someone grabs it first, its theirs! At the end of the day its just some fabric!

So now you’ve learn’t the rules, here are some upcoming sample sales happening around Sydney for you to attend.

Good luck & may the odds be ever in your favour.
