New York Fashion Week (NYFW), is the beginning of the fashion calendar and sets the bar for the rest of the year in fashion. With designers showcasing AW16 collections, the pressure was on to deliver and our Australian designers came through!
Tome left the audience in awe, capturing the hearts of fashion trend setters like Sarah Jessica Parker, Solange Knowles and Amal Clooney who were all spotted wearing Tome after its debut. Inspired by iconic Australian artist and scuptor, Fiona Hall. Tome embodied the moody style Fiona displays in her work, through their mix of latex and fur with touches of lace, bought out the femininity in each bold piece.
Australia’s pride and joy Zimmerman took a leap of fate this season, showcasing a more bohemian feel with a nice nod to India. Nicky’s use of bright colours and silver discs was a perfect reminder of the colourful country. This paired with the wallpaper prints on her kaftans and leggings made a bright statement. Some might argue too bright for winter. Nonetheless, stars like Hilary Duff sat front row and loved it. Beyonce also recently featured one of her dress in her new single ‘Formation’, completely surprising the designer ‘we didn’t know it was happening’. Hopefully this will encourage the fashion scene to get behind this Aussie brand even more!
- Sydney based designer Dion Lee presented a clean-cut look with minimalist approach in this 27 piece collection. It was the metal details that made this collection stand out. Using silver hoops and metal fixtures linking the fabric together gave these simple pieces the edge they needed. In my personal opinion, this collection was the stand out of our Australian Designers. The simplicity of the collection and true wearability of it made it undeniable great. We can only expect more great things to come from Lee and our Australian designers next season.
